Lauren Vaught, 20, a junior at the University of Florida, doesn't have fond memories of the first few weeks of her freshman year when she had to carry around a campus map and ask upperclassmen for directions to her classes.
"This campus is so massive that navigating around it can be tricky," she said.
But three years later and thanks to a new iPhone application, students and visitors to UF's 2,000-acre campus will be able to easily maneuver their way around with a couple clicks on their smartphone's touch screen.
The app, called "UF mobile," features a GPS-enabled campus map, a feed from the UF news Web site, the events calendar from the Reitz Union Web site and access to UF's directory, all in one convenient location.
Bryan Dubno, 19, a UF computer science major, developed the app in less than three months over the summer.
Before "UF mobile" becomes available to iPhone users, Apple has to approve it. Dubno submitted the application for approval on Aug. 26. He said since most apps are approved within two weeks, he expects to receive approval soon.
"When I was a freshman, I always thought it would be great to have a campus map on my iPhone. The online map is hard to use, and it's inconvenient to carry one around," he said.
Although Dubno has developed two other iPhone applications - "Study Sets" for psychology and Spanish - that cost $2.99 each, the UF app will be free.
"If someone else had done this, I'd expect it to be free. I want everyone to have it and be able to use it," he said.
Dubno has made about $15,000 from his other applications.
Applicants need to submit one essay with a 500-word maximum length. The essay topic is: “Please write a concise narrative in which you describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community.” You may need to reflect on your ideas about student responsibility, academic integrity, campus citizenship or a call to service. Your UF application essay is a very important part of your application. You can use to fulfill the task the best way possible. What you write will help UF know you more as an individual regardless of your grade, test scores and other personal information.
