He died Monday night at a hospice in Washington, where he lived for several years. Forman’s son, Chaka Esmond Fanon Forman, said his father had been fighting cancer since 1991 and was surrounded by friends and family members when he died.

According to his son, Chaka Esmond Fanon Forman, in an interview with the Associated Press, Foreman was diagnosed with cancer in 1991.

Forman, who was twice married and divorced, is survived by two sons, Chaka Esmond Fanon Forman of Los Angeles and James Robert Lumumba of Washington, D.C., and one grandchild.
